DIY Natural Stone Care Guide & Maintenance

Here at Star Tile Centre, we have the knowledge and expertise to successfully complete any installation of natural stone. DIY projects are not recommended for installation, and we suggest contacting Star Tile for more information. However, we always encourage those with new natural stone to ensure proper maintenance. Keep reading to learn about how you can take care of your new natural stone install, yourself.

To insure your natural stone products will provide you with a lifetime of aesthetics and utility, proper maintenance is crucial. Natural Stone products are porous by nature and require a different maintenance program than traditional ceramic tile. First step after installation, it’s important to make sure that all cement and grout film has been removed from the surface of your new natural stone. We suggest using an intensive cleaner such as StoneTech KLENZ ALL or StoneTech CLEANSTONE for your first cleaning or rinsing of your new natural stone. Once you are satisfied that your natural stone is both clean and completely dry, we recommend that you protect your new natural stone by applying a protective coating. These invisible applications will protect your natural stone against staining and discolouring and are particularly important to protecting porous natural stones such as limestone and eastern slates. To preserve the stones natural look use StoneTech IMPREGNATOR PRO or StoneTech BULLETPROOF SEALER. Two coats should be applied for best results. You may decide to enhance the colour of your natural stone by using a ‘colour enhancing’ product. StoneTech ENHANCER PRO or ENHANCER PRO-WB are colour-enhancing products with impregnating qualities. Please remember these are not permanent stain protections – we recommend applying protection every two to four years depending on your traffic areas. Again, two coats are recommended for best results. Regular Maintenance Daily/weekly – always sweep or vacuum your stone floor before damp mopping. – always use PH neutral cleaners such as StoneTech REVITALIZER or CLEANSTONE. – never use household cleaners such as vinegar, glass cleaner or ammonia on your natural stone. Occasionally – if you have a polished stone, you may wish to use a “shine” product such as StoneTech MIRROR IMAGE that leaves a bright finish after each application. -your natural stone may require a ‘freshening’ with a marble ‘finishing’ product that will give you a protective coating and sheen. StoneTech EURO POLISH is made for this, although this should be done by professional floor installers. – for occasional deep cleaning, use StoneTech KLENZ ALL for an intense clean.
